Instructions for Value Cards
Discover Your Values
God has uniquely created each of us for His purposes and glory. Discover your values as you take action to live out your calling for Him! Follow the steps below to discover the core values that make you uniquely you.
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10
Session 1 – Identify Your Core Values
Go through the deck of value cards quickly, sorting them into three piles based on how important the value is to you right now:
Not Important
Somewhat Important
Very Important
Don’t overthink this! Your gut reaction is usually the most accurate indicator of what you truly value.
Remove the “Not Important” and “Somewhat Important” piles.
Look closely at your “Very Important” pile and sort them into piles that are similar.
Come up with a “value word” that describes each of those piles.
Narrow down to 5 or fewer of your top values.
Session 2 – Explore Your Core Values
Take time to think about why you chose your top 5 values. Ask yourself:
What does this value look like when you are living it out?
How does it feel when this value is being honored?
How might these values conflict with one another?
Spend some time with the Lord, praying over these values. Journal through it. Pray through each value with the Lord. Ask the Lord what He would say about that value and about you.
Ask the Lord how these values align with your personal mission and vision. Do you see the connection between your burdens and passions and how God wired you?
Session 3 – Identify Goals
For your top 5 values, identify one or two specific, measurable actions you can take in the coming months to live out that value.
Example: If your top value is Kindness, a specific action could be:
“Acknowledge and communicate my sincere appreciation to others at least 5 times each week.”
rather than a vague goal like:
“Be nice to others.”
